Hi, I am Joachim Batzke.
I am an Industrial Design Engineer.
Thank you for visiting my online portfolio, but first let me introduce myself:
I am a young, ambitious designer who loves to tackle complex challenges. My vision is to create products that amaze users and impress competition. I do this by working my way from analysis, ideation and prototyping through, to a final product. Working in a team is essential for me. I speak four languages fluently to make sure to stay communicative.

NowAt this moment I am working on my Master studies of Industrial Design Engineering (M.Sc.) at the University of Twente. I have chosen the Sustainable Technology for Product Development direction within the Emerging Technologies track.
-
Sept. 2016 - NowNext to my master studies I am currently working for Ipsum Energy as a User Experience Designer. I bridge the gap between marketers, programmers and graphic designers in order to deliver a customer journey with the highest possible customer satisfaction.
-
April - Sept. 2016I finished my studies of Industrial Design Engineering (B.Sc.) at the University of Twente. The Bachelor Thesis covered the development of an energy monitoring interface for businesses for Ipsum Energy.
-
September 2013In September 2013 I started studying Industrial Design Engineering at the University of Twente. At this time the study's lingua franca was Dutch. I preferred the more technical approach of the University to the focus on styling of colleges (Fachhochschule) in Germany.
-
August 2013To apply to the University of Twente I had to pass a Dutch exam. After the successful completion of the four week course I obtained the NT2 certificate.
-
June 2013One month internship at ADS Drehservice GmbH as a voluntary preparation to my Industrial Design studies. I worked with CNC-mills (3 to 5 axis) and got an impression of the on-demand production process of customized plastic parts.
-
April 2013One month internship at Bügener Gmbh as a voluntary preparation to my Industrial Design studies. I learned about metal processing machinery and designed and built several products.
-
February 2013I passed the entrance examination of the FH Aachen for the study Product Design (B.A.). The examination included a creative work test, the presentation of a portfolio and an oral examination. Although I finally didn't apply to the FH, the positive outcome of the examination confirmed that my choice for a design related study was right.
-
January 2013Two month internship at Tischlerei Schlang Gmbh as a preparation to the entrance examination at the FH Aachen. I learned about installing doors, windows, suspended ceilings and of course woodworking.
-
July 2012For 5 months I backpacked through ten different countries in Europe whilst hitchhiking 10.000 kilometers.
-
June 2012I passed the final secondary school examinations (Abitur) at the Gymnasium Korschenbroich with an average of 1,6. My focussed subjects were mathematics and physics.
-
September 2009I went to school at the “Lycée Anna Judic” near Dijon, France for one year. At this time I was 16. It was a life-changing experience since it enabled me to speak French fluently.
-
1999 - 2009I grew up in Korschenbroich, a small city in Germany, near Düsseldorf. I went to Gymnasium Korschenbroich and graduated with the Abitur.
-
1992I was born in the south of Germany.

Bachelor Thesis
For my bachelor assignment I developed an energy monitoring interface. A prototype was created, based on user analysis, user interface design knowledge and usability tests. All stakeholders were included in the design process to create a valuable prototype (username: ipsum , password: 12345).

Packaging Design
I developed a new packaging concept while keeping in mind the production, filling, transport and shelf presentation. I chose to develop a packaging that allows users to enjoy and share chips without having to stick their "Doritos fingers" into the bag while also providing the right amount of salsa.

Sweepy - Robot vacuum cleaner
The goal of this multidisciplinary project was to develop a new robot vacuum cleaner concept for the brand Philips. Philips gave the assignment and reviewed the design process. I took the responsibility to lead and structure the design process. I also worked on the functional design and 3D modeling.

Design of a car sharing system
The goal of this multidisciplinary project was to develop a car sharing system for electric vehicles in the context of smart grid technology for Lochemenergie. A real life pilot evaluation of the car sharing system led to an implementation plan for a new car sharing system of electric cars. During the project I took the responsibility to lead and structure the process.
